XBMC Media Center is a free and open source cross-platform digital media hub and HTPC software with a 10-foot user interface designed to be a media player for the living-room TV. It can work on different platforms like Windows, Mac, Linux and originally created for Xbox.
XBMC supports playing CD/DVD media, and it supports streaming videos, audios and images via SMB, UPnP, DAAP shares.
Container formats:
AVI, MPEG, WMV, ASF, FLV, Matroska, QuickTime, MP4, M4A, AAC, NUT, OGM, RealMedia, 3GP, VIVO, PVA, NUV, NSV, NSA, FLI, FLC etc.
Video codec:
MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.263, MPEG-4, MPEG-4 AVC, MJPEG, RealVideo, RMVB, Sorenson, WMV, Cinepak, etc.
Audio codec:
MIDI, AIFF, WAV/WAVE, MP2, MP3, AAC, AACplus, AC3, DTS, ALAC, AMR, FLAC etc
Digital image formats:
RAW image formats, BMP, JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, MNG and Targa/TGA etc.
However, XBMC still can not supports AVCHD files from Camcorder. So if you want to import AVCHD files to XBMC, you will need to convert AVCHD movie to its supported formats.

Step 1. Download and install AVCHD to XBMC Video Converter(AVCHD Converter)
Step 2. Load MTS/M2TS videos to AVCHD Converter.
Load AVCHD(mts/m2ts) files from your camcorder/camera to hard drive, just run the AVCHD converter and click "Add files" button to load AVCHD videos that you want to share on XBMC.
Step 3. Choose MPEG-2 or WMV as output for XBMC.
Just click the Profiles drop-down list > Common Video > MPEG-2 or WMV etc as the output formats.
Step 4. Convert AVCHD MTS/M2TS to MPEG-2 for Xbox.
Click the convert button on the bottom-right of the interface, and the conversion from AVCHD MTS/M2TS to MPEG-2 starts.
Step 5. Run XBMC and add converted AVCHD videos from hard drive to the library. You can also connect the Mac to TV with DVI and VGA adaptor to enjoy videos on big-screen TV and even HD TV.
