Avid Media Composer is a type of computer software application known as a Non-linear editing system. Now Avid MC has upgraded to 5.5.3 for Mac OSX 10.7 Lion and allows for film editing, uncompressed standard definition (SD) video and high definition (HD) editing and finishing.
However, Avid Media Composer still can not support AVCHD, MTS, M2TS etc files from Canon, Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Sanyo etc HD camcorder. It now can natively accept MXF and MOV files.
